This week on Cultural Manifesto, Zakir Hussain, a Grammy-winning tabla drum virtuoso known for his collaborations with jazz, rock and classical musicians from George Harrison, to the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart to Yo-Yo Ma, and Pharoah Sanders. Zakir's music has made him one of India's top cultural ambassadors.

To close out Women's History Month host Kyle Long plays music from historically important musicians with roots in the Indianapolis music scene, including: Sarah McLawler, Anna Mae Winburn & The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, The Hampton Sisters, and Flo Garvin.

This week Kyle speaks with author David Williams, they discuss his new book Indianapolis Rhythm & Blues which documents the development of R&B music on Indiana Avenue during the 1950s and '60s.

This week on Cultural Manifesto, Destiny Muhammad and Pavel of Direct Contact. Destiny Muhammad is a jazz harpist who grew up in Compton, she calls herself the 'harpist from the hood.' Destiny will talk about her influences on the harp, and I'll share music from her album Sonic Legacy, a tribute to the late Alice Coltrane. Pavel and Direct Contact are the premier Latin jazz band in Indianapolis. Pavel will be sharing some music from his latest album D' La Calle.

This week on Cultural Manifesto, host Kyle Long speaks with musician Cyrus Youngman. Cyrus shares how his struggle with a debilitating skeletal condition influenced his new album, "Your life will never be the same."

On this week's Cultural Manifesto, the Indianapolis-based composer Jordan Munson shares music from his score for the Phoenix Theatre's production of Hotel Nepenthe.

On this Cultural Manifesto host Kyle Long talks with two of his favorite Indiana musicians: multi-instrumentalist and composer Dena El Saffar and percussionist Tim Moore. 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of their band Salaam, a fantastic Middle Eastern music ensemble Dena founded as a student at Indiana University. In addition to their work in Salaam, Dena and Tim are also members of Rivers of Sound, an extraordinary 17 piece orchestra that fuses elements of traditional Iraqi maqam with contemporary Western jazz. Rivers of Sound have performed at festivals and concert halls around the world, including Newport Jazz Festival, and the London Jazz Festival. The Chicago Tribune just ranked Rivers of Sound's February performance at Orchestra Hall as one of the best jazz concerts of 2018.

2018 marks the 50th anniversary for Indy's first Black owned/operated radio station WTLC. This week on Cultural Manifesto Rickie "Solid Gold" Clark will join me to commemorate the occasion. Clark was an early on-air personality at WTLC, and he also released the first rap record ever issued in Indianapolis: 1980's "Ladies Rights" on the Indy 5 label.

This week's edition of Cultural Manifesto may be the most significant program Kyle has ever produced. this episode features an hour of previously unheard music from the legendary Indianapolis band Merging Traffic.
