I stumbled across this article on Gizmodo and was sucked into reading it by the headline and the first few lines of the article. The headline is “North Face Apologizes for Showing Us the Future of Marketing” and here is a short quote, “This week The North Face pulled off a clever marketing stunt that continues to deliver. Even following the company’s retraction and apology, the glittering underhandedness of the campaign will inspire marketing scum for generations.” Hah! I discuss what happened on this episode. The demographics of America are rapidly changing and where there are differences there is inevitable conflict. Some of the issues are a result of ignorance to the differences represented in various cultures and as a result, racism rears its ugly head to diverse degrees. I discuss the state of racism in the American workplace and why I think it will become worse in years to come. Quite recently, I had the very good fortune of connecting with Swathi Young on LinkedIn the other day. She is the founder of TechNotch solutions, a technology strategy and management consulting company in Washington, DC. Swathi Young helps companies leverage the power of machine learning to solve business problems; for example, fraud detection and customer service intelligent agents. And to her credit, she is quite the expert on AI and a number of emerging technologies.  On the podcast we discussed the part ethics plays in artificial intelligence; especially in relation to autonomous vehicles and facial recognition. Okay, now this is interesting. Facebook may eventually have more dead users than living ones. According to a study by Oxford Researchers, Facebook will have 4.9 billion deceased users on its system by the year 2100. If Facebook’s current growth rate continues, the dead would outpace the living by 2070. If you want to learn something truly fascinating that you might not have considered before, go to your favorite search engine and look up the phrase, "big data is a civil rights issue." As you scan through the search results and glean tidbits of data from the descriptions, or skim the various articles, you will no doubt see that the world is sitting on a powder keg of outrage. Algorithms and automation threaten to divide my country more profoundly than any political unrest around civil war statues, rumors of Russian collusion or fake hate crimes ever could. Indeed, when it comes to racial disparity in terms of opportunity or various life advancements, nothing is more injurious than the unintended consequences of machine learning. When I consider the effects on society and the labor market, I shudder at the pending reality of it all.
