173: Does Protein Increase your Blood Glucose Part 2: Debate with a Bariactric Surgeon Dr. Rob Cywes.
26/08/2021 Duración: 47minThis has always been a popular topic: does the protein you eat increase your blood glucose levels. "Spike your blood sugar levels" is what is used by those who want you to fear protein and become hyper vigilant your diet if not neurotic. The relative truth of that statement depends on just one variable, and that is the amount of carbohydrates you consume.Looking back on this 'debate' my only regret is that I was too polite, rather not aggressive enough in presenting what I knew was correct. I wasn't prepared for the manner of the debate, but learned quickly to push back. The conclusion that should have been made clearer, is that if you are a person who has a lot of carbs and you have protein (really any form, but I generally mean whole food sources of meat, fish, poultry) your blood glucose levels will increase a lot. If your are on a protein sparing modified fast (ie just consuming whole food sources of protein) then it will not.Enjoy the exchange, it's an interesting tussle of p

172 : Does Protein Increase your Blood Glucose: Debate with a Bariactric Surgeon Dr. Rob Cywes.
19/08/2021 Duración: 48minOver a year ago I attended a lowcarb USA conference where Dr. Rob Cywes gave a talk. Can't remember what his talk was about but he a statement that the protein you eat turns to sugar. I thought that was incorrect an so waiting in the question line to ask if he would clarify that for me. That didn't change anything. I thought then, and still do that was an irresponsible and primarily untrue statement to make. One of the people who ran the conference decided to set up debate between us and this is part one of this debate. The thing about going to conferences and listening to the speakers is that we tend to give them credibility that have no earned. We want to like them, in doing so it allows us to be less critical to what they are claiming. Because we want to like them, we don't want to disagree with them because that makes us uncomfortable, maybe even inwardly angry. That was me. The conference, unfortunately wasn't conducive to encouraging one to disagree in public, but if we are collectiv

171: What I Learned while Working at Starbucks that Made Me Go Back to Medicine.
12/08/2021 Duración: 32minDid you know that the 'auto-pilot' mechanism actually never indicates whether or not the plane is on the scheduled route. It only works by notifying the pilot that the plane is off course and needs to be corrected and gives the direction back to where it should be. but while it is on course, and everything is working fine, there is not indication that is the case. It is merely the lack of 'off-course- indications of warning lights and alarms that lets them know they're on track. Kind of counter-intuitive, eh?Yet it is very much how life works. When we are on track, in the 'ZONE', our focus narrowed to what's important to us everything is quiet. But sometimes stepping out of that quiet reveals something to us that we would not have ever realized had we just kept chugging along. This is exactly what happened to me when I worked at Starbucks. I got to meet people I would have never met, watch the gradual erosion of the youthful health, but the consumption of high sugar coffee dr

170: Why I Left Medicine ... And Why I Returned
05/08/2021 Duración: 33minSeems like in life nothing is a straight line is it? Except possibly when looking back in hindsight and then you can see how things line up, how your experiences were additive and sequential in just the right magically difficult way.So it was for me, bankrupt, dying (certainly my wife thought I was 'passing on') grieving over family losses, and extremely in debt. Ouch!!I left medicine behind, simmering with an anger over why things didn't work out and disorientation as to what was my future. I did hate arguing with insurance companies over coding discrepancies, or explaining my recommended treatment plans for patient's other doctors. I wondered if the approach to medicine via appointments and tweeking patients back to health was really that effective. I thought I left because I was dying.I now see I left to learn more unencumbered by having a practice, or answering urgent phone calls or .....That's when I started reading about low carb living, Keto, an entirely different perspective o

169: Why a Protein Sparing Fast Transforms People's Health Dramatically
29/07/2021 Duración: 30minIf you have had the privilege of ever seeing someone transform their physical appearance by doing a protein sparing modified fast, then you will be wondering, as I am. How can that be possible. I talk about why and what happens to those people. What if they were finally getting the amount of protein they required, or was it due to all the things they were no longer consuming that were bad for them and their metabolism? Kind of both ... but how is that.Facebook Group about Keto: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ketonaturopath/Website: https://ketonaturopath.com/Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/ketonaturopathFree Keto Food List: https://ketonaturopath.ac-page.com/keto-food-list-optinPSMF 30 day course: https://www.thebiointegrationcode.com/courses/PSMFChallengePodcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/482971/episodesDry farm wineshttps://www.dryfarmwines.com/products/wine-membershipKeto mojohttps://shop.keto-mojo.com/?rfsn=3712430.393b9c&utm_source=refersion&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=3712430.393

167: Unsubstanciated Fear: Protein and Blood Sugar Level
15/07/2021 Duración: 29minThe misinformation and myths around dietary protein required for optimal health are everywhere. One claim meant to scare those on a ketogenic from having what they consider is too much protein, says that it will 'spike your blood glucose levels. Oh really!Such a claim is now relatively easy to put to bed merely by letting people decide for themselves by wearing a CGM (continual glucose monitor) for a couple of weeks or tracking it via a glucometer. This podcast is about this unsubstantiated fear and discovering what really happens when you have higher protein whether you're on a ketogenic diet or not.Links:Facebook Group about Keto: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ketonaturopath/Website: https://ketonaturopath.com/Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/ketonaturopathFree Keto Food List: https://ketonaturopath.ac-page.com/keto-food-list-optinPSMF 30 day course: https://www.thebiointegrationcode.com/courses/PSMFChallengePodcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/482971/episodesDry farm wineshttps://www.dryfarmw

165: Can You Make Muscle While You Sleep?
30/06/2021 Duración: 32minAs life leads us all in one direction only, getting older, some things happen to us metabolically whether we want or not and that is obvious aging. In terms of Muscle mass, muscle synthesis, protein requirements some factors are becoming clearer about what it is we must do as we get older both individually and collectively.First, our protein requirement increases as we age (past 25) and especially after 50.Second, our appetites decrease.Third, our metabolism, shifts to breaking muscle down more quickly, And fourth, we become far less active physically in our lives. These factor are addressable, one by one. And when that happens an entire metabolic shift will take place along the lines of what is referred to as anti-aging.Is it possible to increase MPS (muscle protein synthesis) in our sleep? Listen to what we can do to make this happen.Facebook Group : https://www.facebook.com/groups/ketonaturopath/Website: https://ketonaturopath.com/Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/ketonaturopathFree Keto Food List:

164: Sarcopenia what is it? And how to reverse it?
23/06/2021 Duración: 38minDr. Karl asks the question:How did we get here, a nation, a country, a culture, that is growing weaker at a younger and younger age.In the US., an estimated 53% of men and 43% of women over 80 are sarcopenicMost adults in the US achieve their peak muscle mass sometime in their 30s.People who are physically inactive can lose as much as 3 -5% of their muscle mass per decade after age 30The factors facing us all are surmountable, but not taught us or encourage or required by our education system any more.Sarcopenia isn’t just about muscle lossSarcopenia, is not just related muscle atrophy but is more a metabolic atrophy, and neurologic atrophy, that is starting earlier and earlier age in the US, if not world wide. The contributing factors, as you can guess, stem from our increasing cultural inactivity due to, among other things, time in from to the computer and or TV.Sarcopenia is the number 1 associated condition with all cause mortalityFrom cancer, to cardiovascular (ie heart attacks) to cerebrovascular (strok

163: What an Obligate Carnivore Taught Me About My Protein Consumption
17/06/2021 Duración: 26minMost of us understand what it means to be a carnivore, as a human or an animal. Being an obligate carnivore, however, requires something completely different. If a cat does not get all its nutritional requirements met, it will become ill and die. Almost all cat food is processed, and that initiates a prolonged and gradual nutritional deficiency for cats.Understanding the protein requirements of cats has made Dr. Karl become a more serious carnivore for the sake of his health.A lesson from cats that can be applied universallyAlthough Dr. Karl always knew that cats are obligate carnivores, he did not truly understand what that meant until recently. One of his cats would only eat ground-up chicken meat, and she was not doing well. Now Dr. Karl understands that having only one kind of protein is wrong. It can get you into nutritional deficiency.Different kinds of proteinThere is a huge difference between muscle meat and organ meat. There is also a big difference between muscle meat from fish, muscle meat from bee

162: How A Protein Sparing Modified Fast Might Save Your Life
10/06/2021 Duración: 29minIt is simple enough to know that everyone needs protein. Yet, the protein that people are consuming has been decreasing over the years. It is particularly low in adults over the age of 50. To compensate, people are consuming more carbohydrates. Unfortunately, most of those carbohydrates are refined and processed. A simple change that will create a long-lasting and sustainable change is to increase your protein to the appropriate level and keep it there. The Protein Sparing Modified Fast (PSMF) is the best way to start learning about protein. You can then use it as a guideline to create a healthy diet for yourself. Understanding proteinWe need to understand protein. We need to know how much protein we need and how it can change our lives.A different contextWorking with people on various programs and doing panels and labs has given Dr. Karl a different context. He understands that we are not all the same, and we will not all get the same results from doing the same thing.MetabolismTo change your metabolism, you

161: Mental Health Crisis in the US...Got It Covered!
03/06/2021 Duración: 24minSomething that nobody is talking about today is the mental health crisis in the US that was exacerbated by the COVID pandemic.A low-carb keto diet and genomic testing can do a lot to change that situation easily. Now is the time to start!Today, Dr. Karl will be going over the serious issue of mental illness in the US (and worldwide) that appears to have worsened since the pandemic. Mental illness includes severe depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, amongst others. Dr. Karl decided to address the topic by sharing some interesting and relevant audio clips that focus on mental illness from a slightly different perspective. One of the clips comes from a comedy, and the other is from a PBS special coming up in June. After that, Dr. Karl talks about what he thinks can and should be done to manage those situations.Genomic predispositionOver the last 20 years, Dr. Karl has found depression, bipolar, and schizophrenia closely related because people tend to have a genomic predispositio

160: Is C8 MCT Oil a Healthy Bio-hack?
27/05/2021 Duración: 35minSeven years ago, Dr. Karl started looking into how to purchase C8 MCT Oil in liquid form because it was not available anywhere. He thought it could help to heal his gut from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and render his impending surgery unnecessary. And it did! That made him look even deeper into why it worked so well. He learned all about ketones and how they were anti-inflammatory. That required him to learn about ketosis and the ketogenic diet. So, his fascination with the rabbit hole of exploration into C8 MCT Oil began and it has not stopped since.Welcome to another episode of the Keto Naturopath. Today, we will be going over the history of the use of MCT oil. Dr. Karl had a product on Amazon for more than three years that was the highest natural source of caprylic acid triglyceride (C8) available in North America and Europe. He no longer sells his product on Amazon, but the story of how he got there is still valuable. TriglyceridesMostly, fats get transported through the body as a triglycer

159: Depression and Mood Disorders as a Mitochondrial Defect - What You Can Do
20/05/2021 Duración: 32minDid you know that many blood sugar problems (dysglycemia) are closely related to psychological conditions, like bipolar, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder? It is also almost unbelievable that approximately 60% of people with diabetes have some type of mental disorder, and some people have known genetic SNPs that predispose them to schizophrenia. That also makes one wonder about the connections related to bipolar and other mental disorders. That concept was not etched in stone. But the curtain is currently being lifted on those conditions, and new connections are being made and explored. New ideas around processed food additions and methylation dysregulation are coming to light. Those ideas are opening the door to dietary interventions and orthomolecular (use of specific supplements) support. In this episode, Dr. Karl tackles a big topic by segmenting it into smaller ideas to make it a little more coherent and easier to understand. Not everything that he talks about today has been proven, but some p

158: Postscript to Dr. Gaby interview: Supplements
13/05/2021 Duración: 31minIn Dr. Karl’s view, Dr. Gaby is singularly the most authoritative person when it comes down to what we know about supplements and their specific applications for various conditions. Dr. Gaby spent almost 40 years studying, accumulating, and applying various supplements. He has become the definitive source for determining what we know about supplements and how to use them to benefit us and improve our health. We are currently a culture overwhelmed by the clever marketing of false information, particularly around supplements. Unfortunately, that information is full of specious claims that offer no solid research. That tends to leave most of us very confused regarding the truth about specific supplements.Dr. Karl feels that he, too, would be lost regarding supplements without Dr. Gaby’s 1,458-page Nutritional Medicine textbook, which removes the fog of false claims and covers 400 different conditions. The book is Dr. Karl’s foundation for finding out what we know, what is safe, and the doses Dr. Gaby recommends a

In this episode, Dr. Karl and Dr. Gaby discuss some things that might be considered controversial. Stay tuned. We hope you enjoy the conversation!COVID Many decisions related to COVID and nutritional medicine get based on what we already know from the research on preventing and treating other infections. That is because there is not much funding behind nutrition research. Hidden

154: The Famine Secret of Överkalix, Sweden
15/04/2021 Duración: 28minThe Överkalix study could be one of the most important studies ever done to show that some of the changes passed down to the next generation have little to do with one’s parents’ DNA. Those changes are more about the stresses that one’s parents’ grandparents (including the grandfathers and great-grandfathers of the fathers) experienced pre-puberty. That study changed everything in terms of how the scientific world looked at genetic inheritance. One man spent most of his life documenting it, yet his initial work was deemed non-credible. Today, we will share the story of what happened.Dr. Lars Olov BygrenIn the 1980s, Dr. Lars Olav Bygren, a Swedish Preventative Health Specialist, took it upon himself to find out what the long-term effects of the feast and famine years might have on the children and also their subsequent children and grandchildren, growing up in Överkalix in the 1800s. A culture of recordkeepingÖverkalix was an area that had a culture of recordkeeping. So, Dr. Bygren was able to access all the
