It was a different world when Clayton Wilber started his career. Like many who broke into the hoof-care industry before 2000, the Oxford, Fla., farrier struggled to gain a foothold in his chosen trade. Comraderie and communication were foreign. “Farriers didn’t talk,” Wilber recalls. “They didn’t share their knowledge. If a farrier were at a barn and you walked in, he would ask you to go to the other end of the barn or one would leave.”

The International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame is the crown jewel of farriery. We know, because you criticize it. The conclusion might seem counterintuitive, but it’s not. Criticism is good. It means the industry cares who is held up as an example of excellence in this honorable trade. Yet, the true value rests in the benefits of constructive criticism.

On a fall Southern California day in 2009, Pat Barrett set out to do what he had done thousands of times over more than 45 years — trim horses’ hooves. Armed with a halter, Barrett and his assistant entered an exceptionally rocky corral to secure a horse. It was something that Barrett had done since he started working on James Leech’s horses. This day, though, would have a tragic outcome.
