    Hip Hop, the mutant music genre that often changes  like the seasons of the year. You just never know what new fad, slang, liquor, production style, audience, fashion or artist will be hot year to year. There has been a trend bubbling the last few years that has been addressed elsewhere, but I guess it’s high time I tackle it. It’s the white rapper, and things are looking up for those guys more and more.   Consider first that the white rapper IS NOTHING NEW. I know recent history tells us that EMINEM is by far the most POPULAR white rapper ever, but he had a few predecessors. To act like Search from 3rd Bass, Vanilla Ice, House of Pain and more never existed is a slap in the face of hip hop, period.  But there was always the tag in front of the name, we called them WHITE RAPPERS. Well, see that is because there were not that many, and that is where things are RAPIDLY changing.  I have no problem with white rappers at all, as long as they are real to themselves.    Well, here we are, it's once again almost time vote for who will be the "leader" of this country   So let's get to real issue I'm having this discussion: NIKKI MINAJ. Yes, somehow someway she has finally said something worthy of me actually talking about her in a show. If you haven't heard, Nikki caused a little bit of stir with some words she spit in a song: "I'm a Republican, voting for Mitt Romney / you lazy bit**es are fu**ing up the economy..". Words from a collaboration on the new Lil Wayne project this sent my social news feed ON FIRE and my email also. Is it true, the same chic that "beez in the trap" is going to vote for MITT ROMNEY? Hip Hop, in some instances, can be a sort of musical barometer on what is going on in society. One new trend that I am seeing is openly gay individuals that are creating hip hop music. It used to be that if you were gay you never let on about it, and you damn sure didn’t rap about it in your lyrics. Being in the entertainment industry there is no escaping dealing with gay individuals in various roles.  But I want to focus on the gay ARTIST this go round. When it comes to hip hop, being gay is still NOT COOL or generally accepted if you are a MALE artist. Don’t get me wrong, there are openly gay males doing hip hop, but they mostly only perform at gay events like pride marches or gay clubs. On the other hand, openly gay FEMALES artists, hell I see one of them at damn near every open mic I go to. It is a sign of the times I guess. People for the most part still haven’t accepted the openly gay MALE artist. But a female with braids, a ball cap, jeans and  timberlands can get on stage and say “I WILL TAKE YO B***

There are for the most part two things that make a song: THE MUSIC and THE WORDS TO THE MUSIC. Some will argue that BOTH of these elements need to be great in order to make a great song. What we know about us as HUMANS is that we communicated my SOUND long before we had a written language. MUSIC was first JUST THE BEAT before it became complete songs. I guess when you think about it, you can have a number one hit record with okay words and a great beat. Then again some profitable forms of music like jingles are ALL about the words. In the industry, producers and beat makers can command more for their skills and time then artist who write material (in MOST case...but not ALL the time). Of course you have very gifted writers like an R.Kelly who makes a LOT of money from his pen alone. There are a LOT of hip hop artist who arguably only have a career because of the great production they have  chose to attach their mediocre rods to. Sometimes, the beat  doesn't do the words justice.
