In our Explore the Big Four series we examine a record by Megadeth, Slayer or Anthrax. This week we tackle Slayer's most well known and beloved album, 1986's Reign In Blood. Reign In Blood is generally considered to be one of the most iconic and powerful thrash metal records of all time. We talk through it's inception beginning with their introduction to Def Jam's legendary Rick Rubin, who would go on to help them harness and capture their unique power and brutality. We talk about Reign In Blood's status as an essential thrash record, it's length, Dave Lombardo leaving and re-joining the band on their subsequent tour and give a track by track commentary. Austin Manning is a die-hard Metallica fan based in New York City. He's the chapter head of NYC Attitude, a black ticket holder, has traveled the world seeing the band, and won meet and greets. Austin is also a black/trans man. Austin reached out about having a conversation with us about his experience in the metal community in the hopes that it would give a unique perspective, build empathy and inspire other people of color or in the LGBT community to be themselves and know they aren't alone. With everything happening in the world right now in respect to racial injustice and the ongoing fight for people of color to be treated fairly, we thought this was a conversation worth having. In addition to working with Metallica, Alago has worked closely with Nina Simone, White Zombie, The Dead Boys, The Misfits, Cyndi Lauper, and John Lydon. We're kicking it back to our 'Year in the Life" series to dive head first into the mercurial waters of the St. Anger era. Our Metallica Monday commentary series continues with one of the earliest live documents in the bands history, the famous Metro gig on the Kill Em All For One tour with Raven in the fall of 1983. We've got bullet belts and bullet wrist cuffs, fingerless leather gloves, a small club full of sweaty metalheads, and Cliff Burton wearing all denim and showing us all how to headband in halftime. Hetfield learning how to be a frontman, Lars buried behind a mountain of drums, the slowest version of Seek and Destroy ever and Kirk sheepishly handing his guitar to an angry metal militia all too happy to rip it to pieces. Basically, this show is fucking awesome and a wonderful document of a young, hungry band slumming their way through the clubs of America introducing an unsuspecting world to the greatest metal band of all time. Our 'Year In the Life of Metallica' series is a deep dive into the activities of Metallica every year from 1981 to modern day. After dealing with the departure of Newsted and James entering rehab for the first time in 2001, this was an interesting rebuilding year for the band. Hetfield makes his first public appearance since rehab at MTV: ICON for Aerosmith, the band resumes recording the album that would become St. Anger at their newly constructed HQ, a secret club show at Kimo's is played debuting Ramones covers and new material (Dead Kennedy Rolls) and a special, fan-club gig is played at HQ where contest winners jammed with Metallica on bass. Plus guest spots with Sammy Hagar and contributions to Gov't Mule and Waylon Jennings tribute albums round the year out with one of Metallica's most unusual collaborations ever with Ja Rule.
