  • Episode 157 - 2001: A Year In The Life Of Metallica

    10/02/2020 Duración: 01h46min

We continue our 'A Year In the Life of Metallica' series by diving into 2001. This is arguably one of the most tumultuous and defining years the band has faced, beginning with the shocking departure of long time bass player Jason Newsted in January. Without a replacement, the band moved into the Presidio to start writing and recording what would ultimately become St. Anger. But those sessions were cut short when James Hetfield checked himself into rehab in June for alcohol and other addictions. The year ends with James finally returning home from rehab and with the future of Metallica uncertain. Other notable events this year include: - Lars as a celebrity guest on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire - the release of the Playboy Interview - live collaborations with Corrosion of Conformity, Jerry Cantrell and Sammy Hagar - "The Call of Ktulu" wins a Grammy award - McFarlane releases the Justice era action figures - Metallica ad Napster settle their lawsuitIf you think Metal Up Your Podcast has value, please consider

Supportive through the transitions of the two successors of Cliff's position in Metallica, Ray was often seen at shows meeting fans and cheering the band on. 16/12/2019 Duración: 01h41min

In January of 2001, Jason Newsted quit Metallica. Of the many complicated reasons for the split, one of them centered around Newsted's side project, eclectic hard rock band, Echobrain. • Episode 149 - The Playboy Interview (2001)

    09/12/2019 Duración: 01h57min

In the fall of 2000, Playboy journalist Rob Tannenbaum sat down with each member of Metallica separately to profile the band after arguably one of their most divisive years. Coming off the heels of the Napster controversy and a nearly 6th month hiatus in which the band hardly saw one another, this would go down as one of the most raw, contentious interviews in Metallica history. By the time it was published in March of 2001, Jason Newsted had already quit the band and James was only a few short months away from checking himself into rehab. For the first time in their entire career, the future of Metallica was bleak and uncertain. In this episode we break down the notable parts of the interview, talk Echobrain and Newsted leaving Metallica, Hetfield's issues with control, alcohol and homophobia. We discuss Kirk's role as a mediator and find out why Lars became the spokesperson for what he calls "the fist major issue of the 21st century."If you think Metal Up Your Podcast has value, please consider taking a brie

  • Episode 148 - Metallica vs. Napster

    02/12/2019 Duración: 01h53min

In June of 1999, two college programmers launched a program that would go on to change the face of the entire music industry. Napster was the first mainstream program that allowed users to share and download mp3's on a centralized, user-friendly peer to peer network. Within months of launching, Napster had millions of users sharing and downloading tens of millions of songs all over the world. In March of 2000, Metallica learned that an unreleased and unmixed version of their forthcoming single, "I Disappear" had been leaked to radio stations all over America. The leak was traced to Napster where Metallica also learned their entire catalogue was available for free. This prompted an April lawsuit and a year of bad press for Metallica as they sought not only to shut Napster down, but also to start a public dialogue about the relationship between commerce, art, intellectual property and the delicate future of artistic control in a digital age.In 2002 Napster filed for bankruptcy and liquidated it's assets. But in
