  • Ep. 161- Son Dives, Spurs Survive, and Saints Exit the FA Cup, with Jake Hughes of St. Mary's Musings

    11/02/2020 Duración: 01h05min

Show Timeline: Intro Music-00:00 Intro- 00:55 Jake Hughes and St. Mary’s Musings- 2:55 Jacob Maddox Signing- 7:35 Spurs FA Cup Replay- 10:35 End Credits- 1:02:01 Saints failed to progress in the FA Cup and now fins themselves on their shortened winter break with just 1 competition to focus on over the rest of the season. The better team on the day lost according to Jose Mourinho (and just about everyone else). It was tough to take, and even tougher given the injury to JWP, and the Son penalty decision, but Jake Hughes, editor of St. Mary’s Musings, joins me to try to pull some positives out of the whole thing. You can get more from Jake the St. Mary’s Musings team by visiting https://stmarysmusings.sbnation.com/.  Enjoy the last few days of the Winter Break. • Ep. 160- Kevin Friend Never Walks Alone, with Dave Champ

    04/02/2020 Duración: 01h06min

Show Timeline: Intro Music-00:00 Intro- 00:54 Dave Champ and LFC- 4:00 Listener Questions- 40:40 End Credits- 1:03:30 A trip to the league leaders, a return to Anfield for Danny Ings, and Kevin Freind out for a kickabout with 11 of his mates. It didn’t end the way we wanted it to, and the final scoreline didn’t necessarily tell the full story. The match showed a few things, though. The team has come a long way since the beginning of their time under Ralph. In recent weeks it’s given us results and helped propel us up the table. There were very few supporters who would have been expecting a result on Saturday, but I think a lot of people walked away (not alone) with the feeling that the team gave it everything. It’s not worth any points, but confidence in what Ralph wants in the coming weeks may prove to be worth a lot against lesser opposition. Joining me to discuss the match and answer your questions this week is Dave Champ. Dave is a Southampton native who now lives in Ohio. Dave is o

  • Ep. 159- VAR Aghast and Boufal's Blast, with Dan from Saints Brass

    28/01/2020 Duración: 01h10min

Show Timeline: Intro Music- 00:00 Intro- 00:54 Dan and Saints Brass- 6:09 FA Cup Match- 27:55 Listener Questions- 58:50 End Credits- 1:07:20 Also, I 100% called Luke Millard Kevin Millard in the questions section. I made two patrons one, which is not a thing. My bad. When you head to a football ground you expect to hear certain sounds. The fans cheering, the chatter in the concourse, chants back and forth between sets of rival fans, etc. They let you know where you are when you are at a match. If you’ve ever been outside of St. Mary’s on a matchday over the last 4 years then you know the added sound that fills the air. Saints Brass welcomes fans to St. Mary’s each and every matchday and have become an integral part of the matchday culture at Saints.  It was a real pleasure to speak with Dan about the origins of Saints Brass, their duties and rituals on matchday, and the 1-1 against Spurs we were all treated to on Saturday afternoon. If you haven’t had the opportunity to hear Saints Brass, be sure to

  • Ep. 158- Long Time, Long Distance, Long Shot, with Carl Anka of The Athletic and Mike Smale of MatchdayVlogs

    21/01/2020 Duración: 01h30min

Timeline Notes- Carl’s Interview- 5:10 Mike’s Interview- 49:10 This week’s show only has one intro (sorry about that last week), but two guests! I had the chance to meet Mike Smale of the MatchdayVlogs YouTube channel down in LA on Saturday afternoon, so we sat and chatted for a bit and recorded some stuff for both channels. Be sure to check out all of his stuff using the links below. Then, Monday afternoon, Carl Anka used good old fashioned Skype to join me to discuss the match and what’s happening with Saints during the window. There’s a lot here, and you may not get to it before Palace, but listen anyway. It’s worth it (in my opinion). Be sure to check out Carl at all the links below and let him know you appreciate his work. • Ep. 157- Nein, Nein, Nein, with Jay Grant of Southampton Page

    14/01/2020 Duración: 01h18min

Saints put in a wonderful performance at the King Power Stadium on Saturday. They won the match. Whatever Leicester were, they were second best. Ralph and company deserve all the credit for how things have gone since the last international break. It’s been a lot of fun to watch the last several weeks… and that hasn’t always been the case, at least for as long as I’ve been doing the podcast. I’m a little long-winded this week to open the show, and I’m sorry. This episode, episode 157, marks the start of the 4th year of the show, something I am both extremely proud of and truly thankful for. Thank you to the guests, and the listeners and the Patrons and everyone else who has made this show possible over the last few years. That includes the newest Patron of the show, Chris Thomas. I’m a bad person and didn’t read it in the show this week. That’s not great from me, honestly. Next week you’ll hear his name. Anyway, this week I’m joined by Jay Grant, the man behind @southamptonpage on Twitter and Instagram and t

  • Ep. 156- Leagues, Cups, and Colleges, with Lauren Clark and Erin Bloomfield of the Southampton Women's FC

    07/01/2020 Duración: 01h09s

The FA Cup is a magical thing. It definitely has it’s problems, as does any competition, but the idea of giant-killing, a new or unique away day, or eventually playing at Wembley means there’s something special about it. This past weekend was the FA Cup third round. Saints progressed (thankfully), but they weren’t the only team in town hosting an FA Cup match. Southampton Women’s FC hosted West Bromwich Albion Women on Sunday afternoon and progressed via a 3-1 win over higher-league opposition. After Monday’s draw, the team will play host to Crystal Palace Ladies on the weekend of January 26th. Crystal Palace, currently playing in the second tier of English Women’s football, will prove a tough test for Southampton. If you are around the area, please consider attending the match and supporting the team. Before the team took to the field and beat WBA Women, two of their players, Lauren Clark and Erin Bloomfield, joined me to talk about their careers, their past and future playing careers in America, how their

  • Ep. 155- Boxing Chelsea, Winding Up Palace, with Tom Murray

    31/12/2019 Duración: 01h18min

Saints have hit their best run of form in some time, collecting almost 2 points per match since the last week of November after managing less than .7 ppg up until then. There are lots of reasons for the turnaround. A solidified lineup and formation, a better understanding of the system, fitness levels and more. Tom Murray (@T214Murray on Twitter) joins me this week to discuss the matches against Chelsea and Palace, answer your questions and round out the year and the decade.  Tom is part of the team that provides commentary for blind and visually impaired fans at Saints matches through Alan March Sport. • Ep. 154- King Ings Declares Victory at Villa, with Tom Mason

    24/12/2019 Duración: 01h11min

First off, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. It’s the happiest time of the year or something. The truth is, it’s happier because Saints went to Villa Park and put three past a pretty terrible Villa. Jack Grealish scored a worldie that shouldn’t count because his socks are a disgrace. Danny Ings scored a goal either side of Jack Stephens heading home a JWP corner and the game was never really in doubt, though the last 15 minutes or so saw Villa get as into the game as they ever did.  Saints left Birmingham well-deserved winners and leaped Villa in the standings, putting Saints out of the relegation zone ahead of the festive fixtures to come later this week. It was by far the best performance of the season. It had everything except a clean sheet for Saints fans to enjoy. Tougher tests lay ahead, but Saints can enjoy their Christmas outside the drop zone.  Joining me to discuss the match and look a bit ahead to Chelsea and Crystal Palace is Tom Mason. Tom was on the show just 364 days ago, when Saints were

  • Ep. 153- I Promise You, We're Not a Joke. With Tom Deacon

    17/12/2019 Duración: 01h04min

This week I’m joined by Tom Deacon Tom is a comedian, presenter (the pretty one), Saints’ Fan, Vlogger, and Virgin (according to the YouTube comments… I only report what I find). Tom was in the tunnel and on the pitch with Saints ahead of Saturday’s match against West Ham. Tom was tasked with hosting the live show before the match and revealing the Saints’ team ahead of the match. They gave him 12 men on the team sheet, drenched him with the sprinklers and yet nothing could prepare him for what Saints had in store for him over the 90 minutes that followed. I’m running out of ways to accurately and uniquely describe lackluster, slow, stunted, toothless, and inconsistent performances by Saints. I guess we can say Saints were in the Christmas spirit early this week., gifting a goal to out of form striker Sebastian Haller, and giving Antonio exactly what he’s always wanted, an unphysical, short of pace defensive partnership playing a uniquely high line. The man had himself a great time. At the end of the day, S

  • Ep. 152- All Too Familiar with Arron Sanders of saintsworld.co.uk

    10/12/2019 Duración: 01h23min

Saints seem to enjoy staying predictable. The same scoreline, a similar storyline, with the same heroes and villains each and every time. Saints picked up 6 points, but it really should have been at least 7, and the failure to get that all-important 7th point sees the team stay in the drop-zone for another week, but still somehow closer to 12th than 19th (it was 11th before Arsenal dispatched West Ham on Monday evening).  Joining me this week is Arron Sanders of saintsworld.co.uk, a fan website dedicated to giving fans of Saints a voice and being a fun, family-friendly place to get your SaintsFC opinions. Arron does some of the media-editing around the place and joins me this week to talk Norwich, Newcastle and answer your questions.  Give Arron and Saints World a follow if you’re not already doing so. • Ep. 151- A Helping Hand Is Just Enough, with Allen Gunn of St. Mary's Musings

    03/12/2019 Duración: 01h18min

This week I’m joined by Allen “I swear I’m not related to Angus” Gunn (@a_gunzy) from St. Mary’s Musings (@stmarysmusings). We have the pleasure of discussing Saints’ most recent home PL win, something that hasn’t happened in months, or at all this season. However, it’s not all roses. There are a number of issues that still stand out and need addressing, and there’s a big mid-week match against Norwich to think about as well. We chat, we analyze, we make mistakes and we proselytize. I just hope you enjoy it. Be sure to visit stmarysmusings.sbnation.com to keep up to date with Saints through Allen and the rest of the team.  Also, I had the pleasure of joining the Total Saints Podcast this week. • Ep. 150- Heart and Hustle But No Finish, with Rob Maddox

    26/11/2019 Duración: 01h11min

Support The Ugly Inside’s Movember Campaign at mobro.co/theuglyinside Saints went to the Emirates to face a struggling Arsenal team on Saturday. Saints really only failed in two areas. They failed to finish. They failed to finish their chances, which would have put the game out of sight and they failed to finish the game. The point taken from Arsenal feels like two dropped instead. A point away against a perennial top-6 contender should be seen as a good thing, but the win was there for Saints to take. To claim as their own, and instead, they blew it in the end. Joining me to discuss the match this week is Rob Maddox. Rob is no stranger to the show and it was a pleasure to speak with him about Saints near win, even if we did it so soon after the match we can’t help but feel it was points lost. • Ep. 149- Taking a Break, Having a Laugh, with Carl Anka of the Athletic

    19/11/2019 Duración: 01h06min

Support The Ugly Inside’s Movember Campaign at mobro.co/theuglyinside This has been a wonderful break, although it’s been of the International variety. England qualified for the Euros, Davo missed a penalty, Tadic suffered a last-minute heartache equalizer against Ukraine, though he scored his penalty, and the US redeemed itself against Canada. A lot has happened, but only glancing at scores and watching highlights has been a welcomed reprieve from what Saints have put me (and us) through the past few weeks. Now, I think I’m ready to get back to it. Dare I say I’m looking forward to Arsenal this coming weekend in the under-achieving, should be better than we are but can’t figure out a coherent system manager derby. Over the break, I had the chance to speak once again with the Atheltic’s Carl Anka. With no specific match to talk about we had plenty of time to discuss some listener questions, in addition to the few I had lined up for Carl. One of the things I wanted to make sure and address was what, if any,

  • Ep. 148- It's a Shame, Things Stay the Same, with William Porteous of "The Name"

    12/11/2019 Duración: 01h17min

Timeline:  Intro- 2:10 William joins the show- Welcome and Film Talk- 7:27 Saints Talk- 38:20 Outro- 1:14:45 Saints failed, for the 4th time running, to avoid a loss at St.Mary’s. It wasn’t 0-9 this time, but in all honesty, it wasn’t that much better. After going down early Saints simply meandered, seemingly directionless and without much passion, towards halftime. Saints started with a back 3. The same back 3 that stood so firmly for so long against Manchester City just a week ago, but by allowing the early goal, and with Stuart Armstrong stuck in as a Right Wing-Back, it was all going wrong for Saints. Halftime brought changes and the Boufal created Saints first shot just moments after coming on. He then provided the assist for Danny Ings. After that, Saints settled back into the all-to-familiar and slowly let the game slip away from them. Richarlison eventually gave the visitors the lead, and Everton secured their first away win of the season. The result has left Saints in the relegatio

  • Ep. 147- Pep's Peeves, with Jake Hughes and Allen Gunn of St. Mary's Musings

    05/11/2019 Duración: 01h07min

In case my brother downloads or see's this, Happy Birthday. I love you.   Support The Ugly Inside's Movember Campaign at mobro.co/theuglyinside Saints’ schedule this past week is exactly what Halloween Nightmares are made of. Two trips to the defending champions in less than a week just after a 0-9 thrashing at the hands of the Leicester City. Seems like Saints were in for a beatdown of epic proportions. The midweek match came and went, with City moving on in a match that left much to be desired on most accounts. Saturday, however, was a different story. Solid, resilient, and efficient with their shots, Saints held City scoreless for 70 minutes. With Pep absolutely fuming to the point he was running sprints and warming up on the sidelines, City broke through to go level and eventually found a winner from Kyle Walker. Heartbreak for Saints, but there are a lot of different things we can (and do) say about the week. Joining me to do that are Jake Hughes (@JJHughes_) and Allen “I swear I’m not related to Angu

  • Ep. 146- Leicester City Letdown, with Chris Rann

    29/10/2019 Duración: 01h09min

Getting beat by 9 goals is something I’ve struggled to recover from in Fifa, let alone in real life. There are times when you get knocked down, and you get up again, we all do. But, when you lay down and allow things to happen to you, that’s different. It’s harder to come back from. There is going to be shame and guilt and a ton of other things that are harder to shake off.  And, unfortunately, that’s about where we find ourselves this week. Perhaps the poorest performance I’ve ever witnessed. Abject, unacceptable, embarrassing, however, you want to say it. All of those emotions are in the show this week. But, the good news is that Chris Rann (@crstig on Twitter and writing @saintsworld.co.uk) and I were forced to wait a day to record due to some issues with the internet. But, we regrouped and came again, exactly what we hope Saints will do this week.  Chris and I run through the game and the general happenings around the club, answer your questions, laugh, cry and end up having a pretty good time. I hope y

  • Ep. 145- Results May VAR(y), with Freddie from The Ugly Inside

    22/10/2019 Duración: 01h09min

One thing: I was (still am) pretty sick during this…also, very hungover. Go Astros.  Sorry. A point on the road isn’t bad in the Premier League. Take a point against a team who just beat Manchester City, maybe a bit better. Saints were far from perfect, with VAR perhaps getting the MOTM award for us in the first half as the seemingly normal defensive frailties showed themselves again. With both teams netting in the second half the sides split the points. But, was that a fair result? Freddie, the face of The Ugly Inside YouTube Channel, joins me to discuss the match and everything going on over at TUI Enterprises.    Follow The Ugly Inside: Website- https://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/football/southampton Twitter- https://twitter.com/theuglyinside Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/theuglyinside1988/ YouTube- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDGZ3IVpkTRnPauJHMsocAA?sub_confirmation=1 Podcast- https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-ugly-inside/id1423314747 Radio Show: UK- https://www

  • Ep. 144- Writing, Wrestling, and Saints FC: My Conversation with Carl Anka of The Athletic

    15/10/2019 Duración: 01h19min

I’d be willing to say that the majority of Saints fans who are on Twitter, read about Saints online or listen to Saints related podcasts know, at least vaguely, who Carl Anka is. In the past two months, Carl has emerged as the newest, full-time professional writer covering Saints. Carl writes for theathletic.com and is exclusively writing about Southampton FC. The Athletic has compiled an elite group of journalists who cover all of the top flight and select teams in the Championship. They provide top-notch coverage and unique insight on all aspects of the club and sport. The opportunity to speak with Carl was an honor. And I took the opportunity to (hopefully) ask some questions that others have not, hopefully giving some of the same insight to Carl as Carl gives to the team (I likely failed, but anyway). Our conversation covers everything from life in Southampton to reporting for The Athletic, working with editors, covering uncomfortable topics, video games and more. I had a blast, even though I was definit

  • Ep. 143- Fighting Off the Blues, with Tom Murray of Alan March Sport

    08/10/2019 Duración: 01h19min

Sunday’s game against an in-form Chelsea was about as far from perfect as Saints have been under Ralph Hasenhuttl. In fact, it’s a reminder of what the team has looked like on the pitch under several previous managers. There’s no denying that we have plenty of things that need addressing, from the defense to a plan B. But, there’s also no way to look at the team and think Saints have not improved under Ralph at all. He’s far from a miracle worker, but there’s something about him that makes us (well, at least me) happy he’s here and somewhat happy with the job he’s doing. Sure, I’d love for us to be further along, but that’s not always realistic given the different constraints and things we are dealing with as a club. Tom Murray (@T214Murray on Twitter) joins me this week to discuss the loss. He’s seen a fair few of them during his time as a commentator for Alan March Sport, as he's’ covered almost every home match since Saints introduced the Audio Description Commentary service last season. Tom as I discuss

  • Ep. 142- Pound P*mpey Then Spurs It Up, with Luke Millard

    01/10/2019 Duración: 01h17min

We went from 4 goals against a pretty crap 11 men in an old stadium in front of a hostile crowd to 1 goal against 10 pretty good men in a stadium so fresh it still smells like new and was built for the acoustics but turns out the atmosphere wasn’t all that great… that was what Saints have been up to since the last episode. It’s been quite a ride, to say the least, and several fans have been along for it. One of those fans is Luke Millard and he joins me this week to discuss the trip to Fratton Park and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the decisions, the chances, the euphoria and the frustration that so many of us experience in one way or another each week. You can find Luke on Instagram @millard505. Special thanks to Luke for taking so much of his time to share with me (and you), and thank you for taking the time to listen! I hope you enjoy it!
