211 - IRONMAN© 70.3 Indian Wells - Alyson Watson
18/01/2019 Duración: 01h32minThis episode begins the IRONMAN© Indian Wells series. Indian Wells was able to see the inaugural 70.3 event in 2018 near Palm Springs, California. The race had a freezing swim, beautiful bike course, and rolling hill run. I begin the series with Age Group Champion Alyson Watson. Alyson has an amazing story that she shares on this episode. She suffered a wreck earlier in 2018 at IRONMAN© Texas which was her first IRONMAN© DNF. This left her mentally, emotionally, and physically crushed. But this didn’t stop her. She came back into the sport and eight months after her bike wreck she wins her Age Group. This story is simply amazing! Thank you Alyson for coming on the show, I look forward to following you later this year at IRONMAN© Oceanside and Santa Rosa!!-Enjoy the show. 210 - IRONMAN© 70.3 Taupo - Elliot Bach Professional
17/01/2019 Duración: 01h03min210 - IRONMAN© 70.3 Taupo – Elliot Bach Professional-In this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend and returning guest Elliot Bach. Elliot just completed his first full distance IRONMAN© in Cozumel last year then followed that race up with a 70.3 in New Zealand. This is a bit interesting because the training coupled with the travel, logistics, and timing doesn’t make for an easy trip for a great race. We discuss many of the things he recommends for anyone doing this race or anyone that plans to go to the IRONMAN© 70.3 World Championship that will be held here in 2020 as well as some advice for travelling to and from this course, venue, and New Zealand. While this is a New Zealand based race, the course could be compared to other venues on the circuit. Thanks for coming on the show Elliot, I’ve enjoyed having you on and look forward to following you along in 2019!-Enjoy the show. 209 - IRONMAN© 70.3 Taupo - Jocelyn McCauley PRO
16/01/2019 Duración: 01h14minIn this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend and returning guest Jocelyn McCauley. Jocelyn is an avid fan of New Zealand and love sharing her experience. We talk about the race and more importantly the atmosphere of the race and where to eat there. The logistics of the race we talked about last year when she did the full, so we don’t spend much time there. This venue will be the host for the 2020 IRONMAN© 70.3 World Championships and we discuss some of the details that should be known before going to this race venue if you’re getting your slot for the event. Thank you Jocelyn for coming on the show, I loved having you on and love your free flowing spirit. You’re welcome back anytime!-Enjoy the show. 208 - Ultraman Isreal - Amy VT - OVERALL WINNER
12/01/2019 Duración: 02h16minStraight up, this is one of my favorite episodes I’ve recorded so far. I get the pleasure of talking with my friend VT! Like not just talking but joking and walking her through her overall WIN at Ultraman Israel. There were some very emotional times during this race due to some issues she had. Not just her but her crew as well. There are dark places in most long course races, but this takes the cake. The course at this race is beyond challenging, the conditions are tough, and the elements of comradery, trust, and love are among some of the best ways to describe this race atmosphere. There is a certain uniqueness about this race that is just different. She gives great credit to her husband and Coach Chris, her friend Molly, and most of all the folks at Israel Department of Ministry for making it all possible. --Age Group: PROCalories per hour: 350PSI for this course: 100R/95FDepth of Wheels: 80mmDay 1, Swim 10K+ Bike145K: 9:02:31 -Swim: 3:25:17-Bike: 6:27:23Day 2, Bike 275K: 10:08:31 Day 3, Run 84.4

207 - IRONMAN© Cozumel - Kelsey Withrow Professional
12/01/2019 Duración: 01h22minIn this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I have the pleasure of talking with talented athlete and humble professional Kelsey Withrow about her race at IRONMAN© Cozumel. This is such an awesome interview as we talk about some tips that Meredith Kessler. We mention some things that happened to her right before the race that impact her race and also some of the unique tactics athletes should consider when racing this flat, windy, course with a salt water swim. The nutrition is something we discuss in detail and how she is still morphing this into something her body needs at different levels. Kelsey talks about how her friend and fellow competitor (Michelle Vesterby) DNF’d the race but still came out to support her on the run. -Weather that day: 71-84Water: 81-Age Group: PROHeight: 5’6”Weight: 117Calories per hour: 300PSI for this course: 100Depth of Wheels: ENVE 7.8Bike Elevation Gain: 13.1ftRun Elevation Gain: 13.1ftSwim: 48:41T1: 3:23Bike: 5:12:10 T2: 3:22Run: 3:40:36Total Race Tim

Elliot has come on in the past and being that he is transitioning from the half distance to the full we talk about some of the dynamics that take place and also what his training looked like. Some of the highlights include fried chicken and coke and the importance of reading the athlete guide. Even as a professional, it’s important not to get complacent. Elliot had a top 10 finish at his debut and is proud of his performance and looks forward to many more in the future. 205 - IRONMAN© Cozumel - Jana Richtrova (KQ)
08/01/2019 Duración: 01h44min205 - IRONMAN© Cozumel – Jana Richtrova (KQ)-Wow! What a powerful story here with my friend Jana. I’m so grateful for our friendship through the sport of triathlon and with her ability to be so humble and gracious at Kona then power up, head down just weeks later at this race is amazing. She had a bike wreck the few days before the race in Cozumel and we talk about this how it impacted her race. Just thin “Squirrels & Glutes” when you’re on your next run after listening to this episode. 204 - IRONMAN© Cozumel - Michael Ramirez
08/01/2019 Duración: 02h08min204 - IRONMAN Cozumel – Michael Ramirez-In this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend and former teammate Michael Ramirez about his recent race at IRONMAN© Cozumel. This race had a very warm swim that has a shallow water entry. The temperature on race day was beautiful but rose slightly and had a ton of humidity. The roads in Cozumel are truly amazing and smooth. Michael is being coached by my good friend, mentor, and role model Harold Wilson. The importance of this race meant quite a bit to Michael, and his expectations were set quite high. His training load maxed out at more than 30 hours a week. But something happened to Michael during the course of the race and he had to adjust his race expectations. Enjoy the show and thank you Michael for coming on the show and sharing your race with me.-Enjoy the show. 203 - IRONMAN© Arizona - Rebecca Mckee
07/01/2019 Duración: 01h08minIn this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend Rebecca McKee. We talk about her recent age group win at IRONMAN© Arizona. You’ll notice we both sound under the weather, at the time of the interview we both were kind of sick to be honest. I’m still getting over a cough and still sound nasally. But, the show must go on. Cliff English works with Rebecca to have a superior performance at Arizona and with Kona still in the recent rear view mirror, this is a very delicate balance of recovery, mental time off, nutrition, and hard intensity. There were a few issues that the race venue has and I’d like to point out from an athlete safety stand point. Pay attention to this as you listen. Rebecca, enjoy your time off and I look forward to following you at Lava Man in March!-Enjoy the show. 202 - IRONMAN© Arizona - Ali McInturff
02/01/2019 Duración: 01h45minIn this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend, mom, wife, and amazing triathlete Ali McInturff. Ali and I discuss her training and her race in detail and more over what it is like to get a roll down slot or Kona. While she wasn’t going for a slot, she had other goals and wanted to have a solid day. If you, the listener, only take one thing away from this episode it would be to avoid the mistake that she made in the swim in regards to her wetsuit. During the recording of her husband’s episode on Kona, she was doing a 20 mile run on the treadmill. Thank you for coming on the show Ali, I look forward to following you at Kona this year! 201 - IRONMAN© Arizona - Justin Maples
01/01/2019 Duración: 02h06minIn this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend and teammate Justin Maples. Just a fair warning, you may need some tissues handy. Justin and I talk about something quite emotional in this episode and to be honest, it is one of the few episodes that I even got emotional during. His coach Bek has been working with him for quite some time and together they laid out a very well-rehearsed plan of how to achieve a solid performance at IRONMAN© Arizona. His amazing Sherpas for this race and himself share something in common that serves to motivate him deeply. We talk about the various amazing aspects of the race but most of all, I got to know Justin through this interview. 200 - Marine Corps Marathon - Terry Wilson
16/12/2018 Duración: 01h21minAs I sit here and type this up, I realize this is the 200th episode. I am grateful for all of the athletes, friends, and stories I have been able to share through this podcast. In a mere nine months, I have reached out to age groupers, professionals, experienced coaches, and many more through this show. In this episode, I turn the tables on myself to allow myself to be vulnerable to questions just like I have asked many of the athletes on the show. My friends Gemma Hollis, aka @PushGlideKick, from The Woodlands, Texas and Mark Sissons, a proud native of New Zealand conduct an interview for this. I mentioned my own nutrition plan, but to be honest, this ‘race’ wasn’t about the race itself. There are times in life where I fully believe there are moments in time we didn’t get to enjoy enough because we were in such a damn hurry. This ‘race’ was about living in the moment, experiencing the event with my good friend, fellow coach, and 20 year Marine Corps Veteran Morgon Latimore. I am thankful for the chanc

199 - IRONMAN© Arizona - Natasha van der Merwe Professional
16/12/2018 Duración: 01h26minIn this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend and returning guest Natasha Van Der Merwe. We discuss the details of what it’s like to go from a 70.3 just weeks before a full IRONMAN© distance race and how the training looks like and how the travel aspect is different. Knowing she comes from the great state of Texas, she had to get her bike from Texas to Arizona. She mentioned that she used I Love My Bike Transport out of McKinney, Texas to get her bike there safely with no issues. Natasha also mentions some tips she uses for the morning of the race and much more. 198 - IRONMAN© Arizona - Greg Witherow
16/12/2018 Duración: 01h50minIn this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend Greg about his recent race at IRONMAN© Arizona. While this was a “just checking the box” kind of deal for Greg we talk about the mental battles that still lingered on. Even though this was a full distance triathlon, he knew that he should have trained more going into this race. Coming from the great state of Texas, he had to get his bike over to Arizona. He used a developing local company to Plano, Texas called I Love My Bike Transport to get his bike there. Some other things we talk about range from things that athletes should put on their packing list that probably aren’t on there already to some improvements that IRONMAN© can make on their part to make this a better race. Also, one of my favorite parts about this interview is how at the time of the recording we were both under the weather but still managed to get through the interview and laugh quite a bit. -Enjoy the show. 197 - Harrisburg Marathon - Kim Wikel
15/12/2018 Duración: 01h36minI don’t get the chance to do many Marathon interviews, I’d like to do more to be honest. But this marathon experience is very unique. I loved talking with Kim about her recent race at the Harrisburg Marathon. We talk about her training, confidence, sacrifices, and most of all her goals. Her goal was more subjective than objective and we talk about why and how this is important to her. If you’ve been listening for a while, you’ve noticed a trend of when people like to eat prior to their IRONMAN© Races, but for marathons, it’s a bit different. She talks about how, why, when, and what she eats prior and during as well. Nutrition is very important for Kim for many different reasons just like most athletes, but allegories to common products make things more challenging. Kim, congrats on not only a BQ, but also a NYC Marathon Qualifying time. I look forward to following you in the future!-Enjoy the show. 196 - IRONMAN© Florida - Bonnie Cheever
14/12/2018 Duración: 01h45minIn this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend and wonderful human being, Bonnie Cheever. Bonnie and I have known each other for a long time and we talk in detail about everything that went into this race. To include her coworkers and their support for her journey through IRONMAN© Races. They did something that brought her to tears before she had ever left town. We go over mostly the same things as the previous episodes but this is always fun to see how everyone adapts to the same challenges. The challenges presented with this race started when the race venue moved cities just weeks before the race. She talks very highly of her coach Dave Jimenez and Octane Athletics. 14/12/2018 Duración: 01h38minIn this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend Jeff Allen. Jeff is a professor with the University of North Texas and has a great amount of information to share about his race. We talk about how his taper went as well as the complications that went into the planning due to the move in host cities. In his race he experiences many unique things, but the most memorable is the rain in the finish line. It was more like a down pour. His coach Ben Drezek is also out of Denton, Texas and is the head coach of KMF Endurance. Thanks for coming on the show Jeff, I look forward to following you next year!-Enjoy the show. 14/12/2018 Duración: 01h12minIn this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend Lisa Hesse. We talk about nutrition on a new level and how to she got sunburnt. She notes that the importance of bi-lateral breathing is vital for courses like this and some plans she made in the off season. If you remember this race was moved this year from Panama City to Haines City due to the catastrophic events that unfolded that impacted Panama City. Her coach, Chuck Sims, is truly amazing in how he prepared Lisa for this race. Thank you for coming on the show, I look forward to following you in the future.-Enjoy the show. 08/12/2018 Duración: 01h18sI continue my journey of IRONMAN© 70.3 Waco with my friend Lizette. This was her second 70.3 distance event and also her second 70.3 where the swim was cancelled. We talk about how she manages life, how her husband helps with many things around the house but also works third shift. She aspires to run the Great Wall of China Marathon one day. One of her favorite memories is how she passes people who are walking while she’s running on the run. She gets to see her family on the run and finish on the iconic bridge in Waco. 192 - IRONMAN© 70.3 Waco - Natasha van der Merwe Professional
07/12/2018 Duración: 01h04minIn this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk talented athlete Natasaha Van Der Merwe about her race at the inaugural IRONMAN© 70.3 Waco. This race is unique for a few different reasons but for starters the race featured no swim and a time trail start. Natasha was the leader of the race and we talk about how this felt for her and what it meant for her as a professional to race the lead. She uses Tower 26 for her swim training and has a clever way of managing her life/work/training balance in order to integrate it all together. I learned so much from her in this episode and we catch up after her race at IRONMAN© Arizona. Stay tuned. Thank you Natasha for coming on the show.
