    22/11/2018 Duración: 01h35min

In this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my Scott Lewis about his race at the first running of the IRONMAN© 70.3 in Waco, Texas. This is a very impactful episode for many reasons. Just in the past few years Scott suffered a severe nerve injury and had to rebuild himself with strength training and work his way back up. He was a vegetarian for 20 years, but going into this race, he went back to the meat in order to get the amount of protein that his body needed to rebuild properly. While balancing life, work, and training, we mention how he has five kids and a loving wife and some tricks he uses to integrate these together. Thanks for coming on the show Scott, I look forward to following you in the future at your races coming up. -Enjoy the show. I conclude the 2018 IRONMAN© Louisville series with my friend and returning guest Craig Clark. We talk about all of the training and how his year stacked up as well as how to prepare for such a unique day. I volunteered up in Louisville this year and wanted to give back. I saw Craig in the middle of the race and was able to help him on his day. The day threw many curve balls to the athletes on course and the ability to push forward on this tough day shows how strong athletes are in general but also how mentally tough those who finished truly are. I continue the IRONMAN© Louisville series with Professional triathlete Erin Green. Erin is an amazingly humble person and was kind enough to sit down and talk about her not so great of a day at Louisville. While she didn’t finish the race, she was able to learn a great deal about herself through this journey. We discuss something that hasn’t been talked about much on the show and that’s how do you pick a coach. She was with a coach for many years and we talk about how this break up happened, the selection of the new coach, interviewing, and much more. Erin talks about what it’s like as a professional to train and race at the elite level as well as some of the perks of being a Pro. In this episode I continue my journey through the IRONMAN© Louisville with retired MSG Cedric King. Cedric lost his legs in the War in Afghanistan and his mental toughness that allows him to push through. We discuss so many things in this longer episode but it is really worth listening to because the gratitude he displays with his positive outlook on life is truly tremendous. Cedric talks about how he uses his journey to become an IRONMAN© to inspire others. The thing Cedric loves the most about race day is that he is equal to all the other competitors and doesn’t want anything extra. In this continuation of my series of IRONMAN© Louisville, I talk with one of my athletes, Joanna Gaines. We talk about a lot about the training, the race, the lead up, and what’s next. Some of the highlights include the black sand in transition, how doing different strokes for swim training is important, and even some things we could have done differently in training to help her have a better day. The swim at this race was shortened but this didn’t stop her from having a solid day. The rain and cold weather was not ideal but the clothing plan and preparation for the mental torture on race day was there. We share what she wore, why she picked things out she did, and some of the highs and lows on the race day. • 181 - IRONMAN© Louisville - Sam Long Professional Triathlete

    10/11/2018 Duración: 01h36min

I begin the IRONMAN© Louisville series with my friend and Professional Triathlete Sam Long. The race was cut short in the swim to a little less than a mile and it was raining mostly all day. This made for a mentally challenging day for the competitors and from a preparation standpoint of what athletes should wear on the course. The tactics he used to stay warm and somewhat dry is worth listening to and taking note. One of the biggest takeaways is how not to allow negative thought enter your mind when times are tough and some ways to deal with the negative thoughts. Thanks for coming on the show and I look forward to following you in your career next season!-Enjoy the show. • 180 - IRONMAN© World Championship - Rebecca McKee

    09/11/2018 Duración: 01h31min

I conclude my journey through the IRONMAN© World Championship sponsored by Amazon with my friend, coach, and wonderful person Rebecca McKee. Rebecca came on earlier this year and we dove into many aspects of her training and mindset going into this race. She is the coach of the talented athlete Tom Deakins who completed the Fire & Ice 250K race in Iceland. In this episode we talk about how anxiety and stress impacted her on race day and even the week of the race. Changing kits days prior to the race should not be the norm, but there were a few situations where it is suggested. The Jelly Fish in Kona this year were furious and we discuss what happened to her and how this affected her going into the race. Her bike strategy is defiantly unique and with her confidence level and knowing the Queen K, she uses this to her advantage. Thank you very much Rebecca for coming back on, sharing your knowledge, time, and energy with me. I’ve enjoyed having you back and look forward to following you at IRONMAN© Ar

  • 178 - IRONMAN© World Championship - Jarrett Wyatt

    06/11/2018 Duración: 01h28min

In this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend Jarrett Wyatt. Jarrett got a Legacy slot for Kona this year and we talk about all the unique differences of what it’s like to get a slot through the Legacy program versus qualifying. Many think that there’s no real difference but the real anxiety and stress is there. The swim for him is a real fear that he has to deal with and he had a few tricks up his sleeve in order to help him with this. He flew out early in order to get used to the area and time zone but also did something else you’ll want to be sure to listen for. I’ve enjoyed following Jarrett on his Pursuit to get to the Big Island, and now that this season of his life has come to a close we focus on some new goals he has and learn what’s next for Jarrett. Good luck my friend and I look forward to toeing the start line with you in Pietermaritzburg in 2020.-Enjoy the show. 06/11/2018 Duración: 01h56min

In this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend and Kona Qualifier Jorge Filho. We discuss so much about his race and his journey to Kona in this episode. Currently Jorge is a practicing Physician and loves helping others and pursuing his dreams of living to the fullest. We talk about some of the dynamic fundamentals that he does in order to stay injury free while the volume and intensity increases. One of the biggest takeaway’s for me that Jorge said is “fail a lot! It’s okay to fail, but recover from it.” I enjoyed talking with you Jorge and I look forward to following you in the future! I wish your wife the best at IRONMAN© Arizona in a few weeks!-Enjoy the show. • 176 - IRONMAN© World Championship - Brent McMahon PRO

    04/11/2018 Duración: 02h08min

In this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my new friend Brent McMahon. Brent has been in the sport for more than 22 years. I have talked with a great amount of people on the podcast so far but none have had the experience that Brent has under his belt. There are only a handful of athletes in the world that can say they have been to the Olympics and received a medal and also competed in the IRONMAN© World Championship on the big island. Brent has been working with his coach Lance Watson for his athletic career. According to Lance’s website, [Lance] is “one of the most successful coaching track records in age group triathlon, internationally.” The race that we discuss is obvious but the challenges he faces and overcomes along the way are tremendous. Many athletes face hard and sometimes gut wrenching choices along their racing journey and this is no different for Brent. While we talk and discuss his race, I cannot help but to see his overwhelming gratitude for the ability to partici

  • 175 - IRONMAN© World Championship - James Harrington

    03/11/2018 Duración: 01h37min

175 - IRONMAN© World Championship - James Harrington-In this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with returning guest James Harrington about his race at the IRONMAN© World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. This is a very impressive interview as I talk with the details and logistics that go into racing on the big island. We talk about the Hot Corner there on the run course and what it’s really like to have a hard race on such a beautiful day. One of the biggest takeaways from this interview is he mentions that mindsets are not all the same and what his mindset needs to be is not what everyone else’s should be for the same race. I enjoyed having you back on James and I look forward to having you on again in the future. Good Luck next year!-Enjoy the show. While it wasn’t the day she wanted or expected, she learned a great amount about herself, her abilities, and her desire to overcome adversities. In this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my friend Shane Peed. Shane comes back and shares his experience at Kona racing the IRONMAN© World Championship. This is an amazing experience for him, but he is no new comer to the island. His family lives there and he frequently goes there from time to time. He points out a few key factors that are a bit different on this race course that is overlooked by many like the fact that the sunscreen folks are in the transition tent versus having a tent or table set up near the exit of transition. Missy came on the show earlier this year when she got her slot for Kona at IRONMAN© Lake Placid. We do some catching up about her training since then and some obstacles she has had to overcome with some smaller things. We discuss the logistics of getting to Kona and how much it really costs. She has an amazing time with the week prior getting things set up for the race and she credits her amazing relationship with her husband Robbie with the ability to get into the right headspace the day before. She passes along some tips for traveling to Kona that many may not be aware. Enjoy the show and thank you Missy for coming on the show.
