  • EP288: The Scariest Songs of All Time

    27/10/2024 Duración: 01h13min

What’s a good horror movie without a terrifying score? A simple Google search will show you that The Shining can be marketed as a romantic comedy with the right music. Our Halloween episode has Mike, Rod & Glenn talking through the songs that have scared them the most throughout their lives. Don’t listen in the dark.     Recommended Listening   EP181: Overkill “Feel The Fire” https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/07/03/ep181-overkill-feel-the-fire/   HHPP Playlist Tracks:  Slayer “Hell Awaits” https://open.spotify.com/track/3UKGPk85EhjqJSqePrSYeR?si=ab369aaa244a4d86 Bauhaus “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” https://open.spotify.com/track/1wyVyr8OhYsC9l0WgPPbh8?si=37df876e334943ca Black Sabbath “Black Sabb

  • EP287: Peter Murphy "Deep"

    20/10/2024 Duración: 01h10min

This is the third episode we’ve dedicated to the Bauhaus frontman’s solo work but only the second album we’ve discussed (we inexplicably recorded two episodes about his sophomore LP “Love Hysteria”). Both are chock full of excellent songwriting and of course Murphy’s chill-inducing baritone but they are not without their flaws and some definitive signs of carbon dating. We discuss.   Recommended Listening   EP202: Peter Murphy “Love Hysteria" https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/12/25/ep202-peter-murphy-love-hysteria/   EP110: Peter Murphy “Love Hysteria" https://huntsmanhill.com/2019/08/25/ep110-peter-murphy-love-hysteria/   HHPP Playlist Track:  “Crystal Wrists” https://open.spotify.com/track/3

  • EP286: NOFX "Punk in Drublic"

    13/10/2024 Duración: 01h24min

With the LA punk institution NOFX recently calling it a career, we look back at their breakthrough 1994 release and discuss whether it’s a pop punk classic or a steaming pile of crap. Maybe it’s both.      Recommended Listening   HHPP Playlist Track:  “Linoleum” https://open.spotify.com/track/4uB28m7RAflobYpnLMb6A2?si=15af5d7ef2324d3e   HHPP Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com   Our Music manhuntsman: https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRw Academy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-

  • EP285BS: Black Sabbath "13"

    06/10/2024 Duración: 01h01min

Ozzy is back and not a second too soon. We wrap our Sabbath Series with their 2013 reunion LP.  The album saw the return of two thirds of the original quartet and while drummer Bill Ward is certainly missed, the magic that Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler had way back when things all began in 1970 is absolutely still very much in tact. The atmosphere, the riffs, the wonderful doom and gloom are all present. In short, Black Sabbath is Black Sabbath again.    Recommended Listening   HHPP Playlist Track:  “Zeitgeist”  https://open.spotify.com/track/4HFRItYjNrcwT6Vbtbk2i4?si=433fe74bd7874a1e   HHPP Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg

  • EP284: J. Robbins "Basilisk"

    29/09/2024 Duración: 01h37s

    J. Robbins legacy in the punk/indie rock world was cemented years ago. As the driving creative force behind Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Channels and Office of Future Plans as well as the producer of some of the best records of the early aughts including classics by Jets to Brazil, The Dismemberment Plans, Shiner and The Promise Ring, he has left an indelible mark on the guitar-driven rock of the past thirty+ years. His second solo outing leans more heavily into keyboards than he ever has before but the results are no less impactful. The record is eleven songs of exactly the musical quality and lyrical smarts that we have all come to expect from the man.      Recommended Listening   HHPP Playlist Track: “Deception Island” https://o

  • EP283BS: Black Sabbath "Forbidden"

    22/09/2024 Duración: 01h05min

The penultimate episode of our Black Sabbath series and the last before we get to return to the soothing voice of Ozzy Osbourne. Geezer Butler has again departed and as we have learned, that means a significant dip in quality. It does nothing to diminish the legacy of the Birmingham greats as their legacy was cemented decades prior to this albums release, but it is fair to say that our conversation about Forbidden is better than listening to the album itself.   Recommended Listening   HHPP Playlist Track: “Kiss of Death” https://open.spotify.com/track/7qHlkA9ziadFC3p6C8dsY9?si=7111a1b8f6214f4d   HHPP Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Con

  • EP282: Chat Pile "God's Country"

    15/09/2024 Duración: 01h09min

Mike introduces the boys to one of his favorite records of 2022, a light listen through topics ranging from homelessness, drug addiction and serial killers. The album closes with suicidal thoughts prompted by a beloved McDonald’s mascot and the episode was appropriately recorded on Friday the 13th which happens to be the subject of track three “Pamela” which imagines what Mrs. Vorhees life might of been like prior to the death of her son Jason. Enjoy!   Recommended Listening   HHPP Playlist Track: “Anywhere”  https://open.spotify.com/track/1outT7T0CQn6WyTJOPSrt4?si=908832e18a5245ec   HHPP Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ

  • EP281: Against Me! "New Wave"

    08/09/2024 Duración: 01h07min

Glenn hosts our lively conversation about the Naples Florida punk band’s major label debut. The hooks are big and the messages are clear (maybe too clear) but how does this breakthrough LP hold up almost twenty years after its release? • EP280: X "Smoke & Fiction"

    25/08/2024 Duración: 01h14min

The latest (and apparently last) studio album from the LA legends is a worthy addition to their catalog. It’s filled with everything we’ve come to love from the band since their debut almost forty years ago. John and Exene’s autobiographical lyrics, Billy Zoom’s unmistakable tempo drenched Gretsch and DJ’s Bonebrake’s splashy hi-hat all shine across ten bangers that speed by at a brisk 29 minutes. We've dedicated more episodes to X than to any other band (six including the to great Knitter’s first LP) and this won’t be the last.     Recommended Listening   X on the HHPP:   EP3: "Wild Gift” https://huntsmanhill.com/2016/11/23/64/   EP86: “Los Angeles” https://huntsmanhill.com/2019/01/22/ep86-x-los-angeles/   EP121: “Alphabetland”

  • EP278: Top Graduation Year Albums

    11/08/2024 Duración: 01h27min

This episode takes us back to the late eighties to discuss our favorite albums from the years that we each graduated from high school. It’s a fun conversation about the records that have held up all these later and how our musical tastes have evolved over the subsequent years. It’s also a stark reminder of how old we are. • EP276: The Cure "Pornography"

    28/07/2024 Duración: 01h29min

  • EP275: One Hit Wonders

    21/07/2024 Duración: 01h48min

  • EP274BS: Black Sabbath "Cross Purposes"

    14/07/2024 Duración: 01h48s

Just as soon as Ronnie James Dio returned to Black Sabbath for the Dehumanizer record, he just as quickly departed again to make room (also again) for the return of Tony Martin. Given the spottiness (to be generous) of previous Martin led Sabbath albums we were skeptical and not necessarily excited about diving into Cross Purposes however, our concerns were quickly alleviated. From Track One / Side One, "I Witness” on, the might and heaviness of Black Sabbath is back and there is now a seemingly newly discovered restraint in Martin’s vocal performance. Most of it all, Cross Purposes sounds like a capital “S" Sabbath album. While the constant across every album is Tony Iommi, the constant across all the great to good Sabbath albums is Geezer Butler. The Geez is the special Sabbath sauce!

  • EP273: Modest Mouse "The Lonesome Crowded West"

    07/07/2024 Duración: 01h25min

While Seattle had Nirvana and Olympia had Sleater-Kinney, Issaquah Washington had it’s own great 90’s power trio in Modest Mouse, a band of weirdos who had a kick-ass rhythm section with chops for days and a singer/songwriter in guitarist Issac Brock, that had the perfect lisp-ridden voice to convey his stories of suburban America's dark decay with equal measure anger, frustration and disappointment. Their 1997 sophomore LP is arguably their creative peak, each song sounding more vital and urgent than the next. They would go to build a discography of great releases but nothing ever quite reached the consistent heights of The Lonesome Crowded West.      Recommended Listening   Movie Pitchfork Classic: Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West https://youtu.be/G33AcZzZ0pM?si=oEt0P0pbSMJy4-7t   HHPP Spotify Track:  “Cowboy Dan” https://open.spotify.com/track/5A0iajc7nhlZv9tGDHqZya?si=acfac00ecdaa4f8a   Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220

  • EP72: Joy Division "Closer"

    23/06/2024 Duración: 01h09min

As a follow up to episode 264 when we discussed “Unknown Pleasures,” Rod hosts a conversation about Joy Division’s sophomore and final release. One of very few bands to release back to back classics and to have a perfect .1000 batting average. As amazing as their first record is, one could argue that “Closer” is even better. We do.   HHPP Spotify Track:  “A Means To An End” https://open.spotify.com/track/3sAsM39lExnrDY9R3NCNh2?si=71f6129c055041ef   Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com   huntsmanhill.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRw Academy O.C:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/1Jm1I3dIxp16wsCfk9B5PH?si=zhLlbMfxSeWkbE4h-OkzdQ Omertà 68:   https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkSt

  • EP269: Remembering Steve Albini

    19/05/2024 Duración: 01h29min

Steve Albini was one of a kind. As a songwriter and musician in his bands Big Black, Rapeman and Shellac he made aggressive, uncompromising music with biting songs about the darkest side of the human experience. As an audio engineer he recorded pivotal albums for the likes of Nirvana, Pixies and PJ Harvey and worked with thousands of others covering every genre conceivable and changing the sound of modern music forever. He was a small business owner, a poker champion, a husband, a brother and a son. He was opinionated, sarcastic, hilarious and in recent years, self reflective. He died suddenly and unexpectedly at the far too young age of 61, while at work, doing a job that he often compared to a plumbers, a blue collar gig that required dedication, commitment and a tireless work ethic. It just so happened that Steve Albini’s daily grind changed all of our lives. RIP Mr. Albini, you will be missed.    Recommended Listening   Shellac “To All Trains” https://open.spotify.com/album/09SFqMvmXLpfG62LjeSorU?si=CXxw
