A study published today in the international journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research found common large disparities between indigenous pregnant women’s smoking rates and non-Indigenous pregnant women in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States of America. “Tobacco smoking is the most significant reversible risk factor for the health of Indigenous pregnant women and their babies.” Said study lead Associate Professor Gillian Gould of the School of Medicine and Public Health at The University of Newcastle, Australia who led the study. “In each of our countries and in Canada, Indigenous pregnant women have smoking rates that are twice to many times higher than the non-Indigenous women.” The prevalence of smoking while pregnant varied across states and countries, rang

  • Ep. 42 MainStreetProject.org

    18/04/2017 Duración: 46min

For more than a decade, Main Street Project has been working to create pathways out of poverty for the growing numbers of rural Latino immigrants relegated to working in low-wage farm and food industry jobs, with no benefits and no future. We developed programs to deliver specialized agriculture training and skills that could help immigrant workers increase their incomes and leverage new job opportunities. We quickly realized that our industrial food system is actually built on a foundation of low-wage work, externalized costs and direct subsidies; unsustainable by design and beyond repair. We needed a bigger approach. We needed a new system. In 2010, we began development and testing of a new model for producing free-range poultry as part of a sustainable regional food system that would be accessible to aspiring immigrants and other limited resource farmers. We worked with our trainees to develop prototype facilities and a specialized core curriculum including hands-on poultry production and business plannin

School district staff worked with community leaders to form an independent nonprofit organization to meet this need. Since that time, the Diversity Council's focus has grown to include not only students, but also the adults who are their guides to the future. The Diversity Council's mission has also expanded to address an inclusive understanding of diversity, including ethnicity, age, socioeconomic class, religion, gender, sexual orientation, physical & mental disabilities, and a myriad of other differences. Spark! workshops (formerly Prejudice Reduction Workshops), the Diversity Council's flagship program, began in 1996 with a handful of facilitators reaching students at three Rochester middle schools. By 2003, the workshops were reaching more than 15,000 students in public and private schools. In 2008, we received
