    My kids are not afraid to ask me or my wife for things ALL DAY LONG. They are bold, and even when they really should know what we are going to say, usually "no," they ask anyway. Luke 11:5-8 "Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.” Maybe I should be bolder in my prayers...     Just came back from our first family vacation where we had to fly. We sure had a ton of luggage! Each of our four kids had a backpack for the ride, had a few suitcases and 4 car seats! it was a little crazy to be carrying all that plus four young children throughout an airport. I am sure we looked a little crazy. We moved at a snail's pace with all our goodies. After today's reading, I started thinking, how many of us are traveling through life with that much baggage... or even much more. Luke 9:3-6 " He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere” Maybe more is not better...     Sometimes I think we focus too much on the amount of "wrong" or "sin" that we have done in our lives. Jesus clears that up in this passage... Luke 7:41-42 " Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” We all have sins that need to be forgiven, the number is irrelevant.     What do you want? I think that is a fair question to ask. It is easy to get caught up in the grind of life, whether it be work or school, your life can start to look the same from day to day and in the monotony, you can forget what you have been made for. In our reading today we see Jesus calling the disciples from their daily lives to live out their purpose. Luke 5:10b "Then Jesus said to Simon, 'Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.'" Remember that you too have a higher calling than to just struggle from day to day with your busy routine but to also fulfill what God has called you to on this short time on Earth.     I think, when it comes to listening, we are all naturally not very good at it. I think there is something that is part of our sinful nature that has us hearing things the way we want to hear them sometimes. I see it in my own conversations with family and I think that I do the same thing. There is a section in today's verses that reminds me of this and how it can be dangerous in our faith walk in regards to what God is speaking to us. Luke 4:28-29 "All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff." You can know all about Jesus and reject what He is trying to tell you.

    I encourage you to take a moment and google "the crab mentality." It is a good example of why we should be cognizant of those whom we spend time around most.     What does your reputation look like? Is it accurate to who you are? Does it reflect whom God has called you to be? We read about the Queen wanting to meet Solomon due to his reputation. 2 Chronicles 9:5-6 "She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. But I did not believe what they said until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half the greatness of your wisdom was told me; you have far exceeded the report I heard." One of my favorite things about our relationship with God is that He can make all things new and can use all circumstances to further the kingdom. If you give your reputation to God, whether good or bad, He will use it!     Don't let life pass you by without experiencing the greatness that God has planned for you. We learn about Solomon in our reading for the next few days, right out the gate in these first couple chapters we learn why Solomon lived such a great life.     Minimalism is becoming more and more attractive to me as time goes on :) It just seems like we accumulate so much stuff. Which leaves me thinking, am I being "content" with the wrong things? Philippians 4:12-13 " I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. " Instead of being content with the things that we have, have we made the mistake of being content with our relationship with God? When we actively pursue God, we become more content with the things of this world.     I am starting to believe that the closer to God I am in my relationship with Him, the more selfless I become. We read in scripture today in the first 2 chapters in Philippians. Here I am reminded of the impact we have on those around us, so do not complain :) Philippians 2:14-15 "Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky " When we are close to God and become more and more selfless, what will we have to complain about anyway?     I think I realized for the first time, in my opinion, where Samson went wrong. I talk about it today in this really short (3-minute) podcast... Judges 15:3 "Samson said to them, “This time I have a right to get even with the Philistines..." Samson decided to marry a Philistine, the very people God had set Samson apart to rescue His people from. When God rescues you from something, do not go back to it, do not covet it, and do not make it a big part of your life again (remove it completely).     What does it take to make a difference... We read about Samson today and tomorrow. There were a few verses that impacted me, specifically the one describing Samson when he was born and some of the things he was not to do to stay set-apart. It is through Jesus that we are able to be set-apart now, not only are we able to now but that is the life we were called to live... a holy life. Judges 13:5 "...whose head is never to be touched by a razor because the boy is to be a Nazirite, dedicated to God from the womb..." God used a single person to make a difference in a nation. The requirement to be used was to be set-apart. May we all have the insight and discipline to live a life that can be used by God.     What is holding you back? I am reminded in this passage that all we really need to succeed in this life, to accomplish what God has called us to, is a close relationship with God. The Israelites succeed, even with 99% of the resources not in use, because God was with them! Judges 7:2 "The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men...." God wanted to show the Israelites that all they really needed was Him. So He asked them to release some men to make it obvious the win in battle was solely due to Gods favor. May we be reminded that we have everything we need to accomplish God's will for our lives... God. So let's leave the fears and excuses behind us and allow God to work through us.   • (155) Remove the temporary fix

    There is a big difference when you make up a temporary fix vs. fixing something the way it was meant to be. When you are dealing with things that are less significant, I give the example of a car today, than it may be fine. The problem is we can have the tendency to do that with our life. When things get hard we default to trying to make things easier or to do whatever feels good at the time. This sort of lifestyle is really one that is promoted in our culture but ultimately leaves people empty. They are temporarily fixing their life by putting something else in the place of God. The Israelites do this and when things start falling apart, they call upon the Lord who ultimately has Gideon tear down their Idols and make God the center of their lives again. Judges 6:25-26 "...Tear down your father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside it. Then build a proper kind of altar to the Lord your God..." May we all keep God as our #1 priority in our lives!

We have been restoring it as it was not being used for its original purpose, it had been beat up a little, has some scars, but we are restoring it to its intended use and are excited about all the future possibilities!
