  • LHRL #89- Just the hosts

    21/03/2018

https://youtu.be/OL3Xe6_lcS8 This episode is just the hosts. We talk about past races, future races, The CrossFit Open, and many things that have no real place on a running and lifting podcast. Part of why I enjoy our podcast so much is because no one takes it too seriously. Yes, we want to produce a quality show but we are also here to celebrate the fact that fitness allows us to enjoy activities and gives us the energy to laugh and form friendships. Our listeners are all light-hearted and allow us to be ourselves. I'm not sure what about my life would be different without the LHRL Podcast but I am really grateful that I have it and I am especially grateful that people respond so positively to it. Thank you for allowing this to be so much fun. Peace, Love, and all things Beef related, Beefcake

  • LHRL #88 with Brown Dudley of Soli Foods

    14/03/2018

https://youtu.be/9Z13aBGWpVs In March of 2015, I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). The average age of the person diagnosed with CML is 65. I was 35. I lost so much weight leading up to and throughout treatment that I was a shell of my former self. When it got to the point that I had no energy to hold my then 1-year-old son for more than a few minutes, I was determined to take control and regain the strength that cancer had taken from me. I told my oncologist that I wanted to return to my previous level of fitness, including taking supplements to fast track my progress, but he wouldn’t allow it, as my kidneys and liver were being taxed too heavily by my treatment. If I wanted to fully fortify myself, he explained, I’d have to find my supplements where they naturally occur: in natural, unprocessed foods. From then on, I geeked out on nutrition. I read every article I could find and began my own system of meal preparation. Unfortunately, my meals were repeti

  • LHRL #86- William Albritton

    28/02/2018

His company has created custom marketing strategies for over 100 affiliates. Over 1,000 affiliates have been through their marketing training. Out of Box specializes in growing gyms by projecting the gym's authentic voice -- not salesy, cheesy, manipulative fitness ads that are so prevalent in the fitness world. He loves spending time with his wife and 18-month old daughter. William has a degree is in Mechanical Engineering from LSU and an MBA from Tulane. In his "former life", he was an endurance athlete, running over a dozen marathons including Pike Peak (deemed the hardest in America) and a couple of ultras. • LHRL #85- Sylamore

    21/02/2018

https://youtu.be/RjZj_4bJfoA It's that time of year again. We loaded up the wagons, stocked up on beef jerky, sprees, beer, and cheese dip and headed to Mountain View Arkansas for the Sylamore 50K/25K race. This is always a good time. This was my first 50k four years ago and easily the hardest of any races you will catch me running. We did a podcast and had some laughs. We like to give each other a hard time and someone in the room is always the butt of a joke but we all love each other. No one cares how athletic or fast the other person is, we all just want to have a good time and get lost in the woods for a few hours (or all friggin day). I would not trade this experience for anything in the world. Enjoy the podcast. Peace, Love, and all things Beef related, Beefcake

Even though Kevin wasn’t the fastest runner, Coach Horton instilled in him a love for running. Kevin stopped running for several years after high school and returned to it about 15 years ago because “It’s cheaper than therapy for stress relief and I like to eat.” Kevin coached middle school cross country at St. Louis Catho

  • LHRL #82- Shereen and Jon Bienz

    31/01/2018

https://youtu.be/xVoUAbOCIFY Shereen Bienz has been involved in the CrossFit industry after joining a gym in 2010 because she wanted to impress a guy she met in a bar. Shereen ended up marrying that guy two years later, so she guesses it was a good idea. It completely changed her life. She became interested in competing within that first year, snagging a spot on the CrossFit Memphis regional team after the very first CrossFit Open in 2011. Soon after that, Shereen got her L1 and became interested in coaching CrossFit. Between part-time coaching and competing in different local and national events (including Wodapalooza), it was clear that fitness was a passion. Almost 5 years after joining CrossFit Memphis, she took a risk and left her wonderful job at a medical device company (thanks to the support of her husband Jon and the friends that hired her) to join Barbell Shrugged. During this time Shereen also coached at several gyms in the city of Memphis because she just plain loved CrossFit so much. This past ye

  • LHRL #80- Laura Pinckley and the weight loss challenge

    17/01/2018

https://youtu.be/AJ4TQ-XW8QA This week on the Lift Heavy Run Long® Podcast we had one of my favorite guests, Laura Pinckley, to come on the show and talk to us about a weight0loss challenge that is going on at Olive Branch CrossFit. We have light-hearted conversations about the gym's specific challenge but we also discuss the importance of challenges and why it might be beneficial to involve community in your goal setting. We are all aware that New Year's Resolutions have a terrible success rate but so do most things that involve making drastic changes in your life. I think it is important to try to make positive changes in your life as often as possible. Challenges and resolutions involve failure but that is what makes them so potentially rewarding. Enjoy the show!

  • LHRL #78- Lorrie Williams

    27/12/2017

https://youtu.be/vYApUL9Nay4 This week on Lift Heavy Run Long® we sit down with a friend who has a unique perspective on the sport of trail running. Lorrie Williams, who has a unique bond with damn near everybody who has ever had a blister while running on a trail, has come to be known as The Queen of Crew. Lorrie, having a hatred for running herself, has found a spot for herself in the trail running community by helping to care for the needs of participants in ultra races as they stumble into aid stations, virtually unable to take care of themselves. Those who have been under Lorrie's care, speak of her as if she is some sort of mythical character who just sort of popped-up, changed their clothes, fed them, took care of their ailments, and then promptly and assertively kicked their asses out of the chair and forced them to get back to work. To know Lorrie is to have an ally. She sincerely wishes the best for all the participants in the endurance races and knows that there is generally more at stake, on a

  • LHRL #77- Von Ralls’ 100Mile Experience

    20/12/2017

I finally did it! I ran the big 100. It’s been haunting me in the back of my mind for at least the last 4-5 years. I knew I had to do it, but I just couldn’t ever get my brain wrapped around it. Every time I finished a 50 miler I would say, “There is no way I could do another 50 miles. Just no way!” Well, I finally talked myself into registering for one, and went and got it done. The Tunnel Hill 100. In this podcast we talk about what happened leading up to the race, during the race, recovering from the race, lessons learned from the race and much more. I hope you enjoy it and take something away from the story of my first 100 miler.

  • LHRL #75- Lisa Smith

    06/12/2017

https://youtu.be/5wABKZNt2VA Throughout college, Lisa Smith was a heavier and not at all fit. She got into running by the end of college, starting losing weight, and the snowball of fitness that is now her life started rolling. Over the next few years, she completed numerous short distance races and eventually took on the St. Jude Marathon. She met her boyfriend who got her into GORUCK challenges and ultra running. She completed a 50 miler, got into triathlons, especially XTERRAs, with the goals of completing an Ironman, XTERRA National Championships and running a 100-miler, although those goals never came to fruition. She realized that health and fitness are where her passions lie and completed her MS in Health and Exercises Sciences at the U of M.  During that time is when she found Olympic weightlifting. She had been doing the stereotypical type of lifting for several years but decided to try out Olympic style during summer of last year. She went to training hesitantly a few times and was immediately hoo

  • LHRL #72- Olaf Schulz

    08/11/2017

https://youtu.be/OuWIz_IpcmY Originally from the suburbs of Chicago, Olaf Schulz has lived in Memphis for 15 years.  Teased for being chubby and out of shape as a child, and lacking any demonstrable athletic prowess in school, he took solace walking or jogging during gym class.  While he continued to run casually in college, it wasn’t until he arrived in Memphis that he was introduced to the larger world of running.  As a new resident in town, Olaf was told to run a local 5k to meet people.  He was immediately hooked with competitive athletics, and as the years passed, he was introduced to the running community in Memphis.  Since then, he has become interested in several sports, including triathlons, adventure racing, and cycling. Olaf has competed in two adventure racing national championships and one triathlon national championship.  He’s run over a dozen marathons and/or 50ks and is a three-time winner of the Swampstomper 50k, a winner of the Sylamore 50k and has finished third in the St. Jude marathon.
